Previous Volunteers

May 2018

May's Volunteer of the month was...

Martin Seagrave, Reception and Information Volunteer, who supports the Bristol Reception and Information team.

We asked Martin a few questions about his volunteering role

What do you do?

I welcome young people to the clinic, triage their needs, then either signpost them to the right service, book them in to see a health professional, or give them appropriate literature.

Why did you want to volunteer with Brook?

I love the way the Brook works with young people and wanted to use my youth work background to support that work. It's also a great way to improve on my own skills, knowledge, and experience.

What do you get out of volunteering for Brook?

A real sense of satisfaction in doing something worthwhile, great support from my colleagues, and quite a few laughs and smiles along the way!

What would you say to someone who was considering volunteering at Brook?

Go for it! It's a brilliant organisation to volunteer for, you'll get a great deal of satisfaction from it, and you'll be supporting young people when they really need it.

April 2018

April's Volunteer of the month was...

Leah Kenny, Brook Champion who supports the development of Brook clinical services

We asked Leah a few questions about her volunteering role.

What do you do?

As a clinical champion, I help Brook in the development of their clinical services, for example by reviewing website content or giving insight into whether services are young people friendly or not. I also attend events on behalf of Brook, not just with a focus on clinical services, but on sexual health and education more generally.

Why did you want to volunteer with Brook?

I have a background in sexual health, it is an area I feel passionately about, both in improving services and experiences locally and on an international scale. Often we forget that here in the UK, we have poor sexual health outcomes as a result of for example, inadequate sex ed that has not kept up with societal changes and funding cuts to sexual health services. I have always loved the work that Brook does, and believe they provide much needed services for young people across the country. I wanted to be a part of this important work they do. I was eager to learn and keep abreast of issues and developments in sexual health and, while I am still a young person, give insight from my personal experiences.

What do you get out of volunteering for Brook?

Through volunteering as a champion I have been able to meet really great people working/studying/interested in the field of sexual health. Apart from building a network with people across the country (both professionals and young people), other important aspects of volunteering have been learning how charities like Brook run and that by using the voice of young people to 'champion' sexual health - we can actually drive changes!

What would you say to someone who was considering volunteering at Brook?

Go for it! If you are passionate about sexual and young people's health and have some time (it doesn't have to be heaps!) to dedicate then I think you can gain a lot from volunteering, whilst also helping a charity that provides vital services.

We also heard from Laura West, Participation and Volunteering Manager, who nominated Leah who told us more about the benefit she brings to Brook and young people.

Why did you nominate Leah for volunteer of the month?

Leah is an outstanding Champion and really helps ensure that actions are completed to a high quality to help the development of Brook. She is quick to respond and always does what she commits to. Leah is extremely proactive in involving others and spreading the word of the work which the Champions and Brook does.

How does Leah support young people and Brook's work?

Leah, and the rest of the Champions, work alongside staff to develop elements of work and make sure that relevant people are involved in decisions which affect them. This is a massive benefit to Brook and all staff as we have more confidence in our work as we know we are developing the organisation in line with what young people need and want.

What's the best thing about having Leah, and other volunteers, working with you?

The Brook Champions bring so much enthusiasm it is amazing to work with them; listening to their ideas, and then creating or updating whatever it is inline with their thoughts. It's also great to know that some of the opportunities will also be developing their skills and furthering their knowledge.

Thank you Leah for everything you do to support young people, and Brook. We hope you continue to enjoy and succeed in your volunteering role.

February 2018

February's Volunteer of the month was...

Rachel Heah, Education Volunteer who supports the Education and Wellebeing team in Liverpool and Wirral

We asked Rachel a few questions about her volunteering role.

What do you do?

I started off doing a bit of everything but now I mostly volunteer at Carousel (or Bitesize) events. I love being able to help out at the various tables and to be able to lead or contribute to discussions, especially around gender and sexuality. I also use my volunteering as an opportunity to inform my own studies on children's rights and sexuality education.

Why did you want to volunteer with Brook?

I started with Brook because I needed some practical experience for my PhD studies, but I stayed on because the team are so fun and lovely to work with.

What do you get out of volunteering for Brook?

Experience, knowledge, and team spirit! Also feels really good to be able to teach young people about sexual health and sexuality because I think it is really important to them.

What would you say to someone who was considering volunteering at Brook?

It is an experience of a lifetime - do it!!

We also heard from Viccie Hamlet, Education and Wellbeing Coordinator, who nominated Rachel who told us more about the benefit she brings to Brook and young people.

Why did you nominate Rachel for volunteer of the month?

Rachel has been a volunteer for Liverpool and Wirral Education teams for over 2 years and in that time has supported the delivery of our carousel events and LGBTQ+ youth groups. Rachel is researching Sex and Relationships Education in secondary schools. In particular, finding what secondary school pupils, think of the sex and relationships education they have received at school so she can understand how, if at all, SRE lessons in school can be improved.

How does Rachel support young people and Brook's work?

Rachel has been a volunteer for Liverpool and Wirral Education teams for over 2 years and in that time has supported the delivery of our carousel events and LGBTQ+ youth groups. What's the best thing about having Rachel, and other volunteers, working with you?

In addition to having an extra team member for delivery, having volunteers in Brook also helps to inform the sessions we create. Rachel in particular has conducted research with secondary schools across Liverpool and our local Brook has been evaluated highly. Rachel is going to feed her research back to us which we will be able to use.

Volunteers bring a fresh and different perspective to the work we do. They are often committed and motivated and their time and energy is invaluable.

Thank you Rachel for everything you do to support young people, and Brook. We hope you continue to enjoy and succeed in your volunteering role.

January 2018

January’s Volunteer of the month was...

Toby Hollins, RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) Volunteer who supports the  participation and volunteering team

We asked Toby a few questions about his volunteering role

What do you do?

I work with Brook to provide opinions of young people as to what good RSE looks like. Including collaborating with others to create the young persons' manifesto. As an extension of this I was part of a smaller cohort involved in the parliamentary event to express directly to the DfE the key points of the manifesto. I have also been involved on an individual scale writing an informal piece for CYPN about the RSE I have received. More recently, I appeared on the Victoria Derbyshire show and also BBC News as a spokesperson for the need for high quality RSE in schools as a result of the 8-week call for evidence towards shaping the compulsory RSE curriculum.

To sum up my role with Brook, I am a spokesperson for what good RSE looks like and changes that need to be made, as someone who had insight into the current education system.

Why did you want to volunteer with Brook?

I wanted to volunteer with Brook because I believe as do many other young people that the current RSE program is not good enough. When the opportunity came to draft the young persons' manifesto I jumped at the chance. As such an opportunity to help create change and make something better (in this case RSE) does not come often.

'Every Little Helps.' As good RSE is something I believe in I wanted to contribute to any step forward for positive RSE.

What do you get out of volunteering for Brook?

Volunteering for Brook has helped me in more ways than I could have predicted. I have done a range of things, working to create the young persons' manifesto gave me team-working skills particularly in the realm of bouncing ideas of other people.
Additionally the parliamentary event aided my public speaking skills. To some extent the television work also did, although I feel like that gives you very specific skills as it is such a specialised media.

However, oddly I feel like the thing Brook has given me the most experience of is online, e-mail, correspondance. Which although sounds mundane will no doubt serve me very well in the future.

What would you say to someone who was considering volunteering at Brook?

I would say, go for it. Brook is a well run charity who puts the values of young people at their core.
A young person volunteering for Brook has everything to gain. They might even make some friends along the way.

Nowdays I feel schools and parents put alot of emphasis on 'extra curricular' and say things like "Oooh that will really spice up your CV." Yes this is somewhat true, but don't think of it like that. Volunteering shouldn't be about what you gain from it, it should be about how you can aid Brook best, by throwing yourself at it.

We also heard from Isabel Inman, Media and Comms Manager, who nominated Toby who told us more about the benefit he brings to Brook and young people.

Why did you nominate Toby?

Toby first volunteered with Brook when he took part in a workshop to help create the Young People' Manifesto (a joint Durex funded project with FPA). He has subsequently spoken at a Parliamentary event where he addressed Justine Greening (former Secretary of State for Education) and explained what he would like to see on the curriculum when RSE becomes mandatory from 2019. Toby's speech was quoted several times on social media, and the hashtag for the event #RSE2017 trended on Twitter in the UK. It was Toby's confidence that led to us invite him to appear on live TV. He spoke on behalf of young people on the Victoria Derbyshire Show (BBC2) in response to the Department for Education's RSE call for evidence. He was filmed for BBC News in the same day!

How does Toby support young people and Brook’s work?

Toby's willingness to speak publicly on behalf Brook has helped to raise our profile and promote the work that we are doing to campaign for quality RSE in schools. Likewise he is an excellent spokesperson for young people.

What’s the best thing about having Toby, and other volunteers working with you?

As the Media & Comms Manager it is really important that I create opportunities to share the views of young people, and this would not be possible without proactive volunteers like Toby.

Thank you Toby for everything you have done to support young people, and Brook.

December 2017

December’s Volunteer of the month was...

Kirsty Bates, Participation and Volunteering Lead Volunteer who supports the participation and volunteering team

We asked Kirsty a few questions about her volunteering role

What do you do?

I volunteer closely with the Participation & Volunteering team, alongside another Lead Volunteer, to help identify, and develop opportunities for young people, professionals and parents/carers to be involved in the shaping of Brook's work. Our most recent project has been the launch of the Brook Champion groups!

Why did you want to volunteer with Brook?

I have always been passionate about issues relating to sexual health, youth development, reproductive rights and gender equality, having worked and volunteered for numerous organisations in the past. I first came across Brook's Participation opportunities in 2016 and got to attend a number of high-profile and exciting events. It was through this that I decided I would like to progress to sourcing and developing similar opportunities for other young people to share their experiences and get their voices heard.

What do you get out of volunteering for Brook?

The work Brook does to support and empower young people is amazing. They're a really trailblazing organisation, and the benefits of volunteering are endless! There are so many experiences that have directly helped me progress further with my career and also enrich my social life.

What would you say to someone who was considering volunteering at Brook?

Definitely do it! There are so many benefits and the staff teams are so supportive. Stay open-minded, as you are likely to hear so many differing points of view and learn so many different perspectives whilst being involved.

We also heard from Hannah Panes, Participation and Volunteering Coordinator, who nominated Kirsty who told us more about the benefit she brings to Brook and young people.

Why did you nominate Kirsty?

Kirsty has dedicated a lot of time and enthusiasm to her role with Brook on top of a full time job. She has been instrumental in developing volunteer roles and was and her support with training our new Brook Champions was invaluable and we know she will be an amazing support to the other volunteers.

How does Kirsty support young people and Brook’s work?

Kirsty has ensured roles we have developed are suitable for other young people and has helped us develop them with her added insight as a young volunteer. Kirsty has bought many great and exciting ideas to the development of Participation and Volunteering at Brook.

What’s the best thing about having Kirsty, and other volunteers working with you?

The insight Kirsty gives us to help us develop our projects is invaluable. She's also very professional and fun to work with!

Thank you Kirsty for everything you have done to support young people, and Brook.

Find out about the Participation and Volunteering Lead Volunteer role.

October 2017

October's Volunteers of the month was...

Jacqueline and Ruby, Event Supporters who both promoted Brook for us at the recent Stoke Newington Music Festival in London this month.

We asked Jacqueline and Ruby a few questions about their volunteering role

What did you do?

We walked through Stoke Newington music festival and approached patrons to talk about Brook’s services and mission.

Why did you want to volunteer with Brook?

Ruby: I wanted to support Brook’s  work, and get a better understanding of the organisation.

Jacqueline: I wanted (and would like to continue) to work with Brook because I am passionate about spreading awareness and accurate information about sexual health. I am currently pursuing a masters at UCL in Education, Health Promotion, and International Development, and plan to write my dissertation on comprehensive sex education and its effects on different populations.

What did you get out of volunteering for Brook?

Ruby: I enjoyed meeting their members of staff and developing my understanding of the organisation and its work. I enjoyed engaging with members of the public about the issues that Brook works on.

Jacqueline: In working with Brook, I am able to impact the community, whether directly through awareness or indirectly through collecting donations. I enjoy speaking to members of the community about the positive change Brook is making for under 25s.

What would you say to someone who was considering volunteering at Brook?

Ruby: Do it!

Jacqueline: I would encourage anyone interested in promoting sexual health awareness to volunteer with Brook. The event was a fun way to help raise money for Brook, and I look forward to volunteering through more events in the future!

We also heard from Sally Dolton, Partnerships Coordinator, who nominated Jacqueline and Ruby, who told us more about the benefit they bring to Brook and young people.

Why did you nominate Jacqueline and Ruby?

They did a fantastic job at the Stoke Newington Music Festival by collecting cash donations in the participating bars and spoke to members of the public about Brook including answering any questions they had.

How do Jacqueline and Ruby support young people and Brook’s work?

Jacqueline and Ruby were both great ambassadors for Brook- enthusiastic, confident and engaging. They both collected a lot of donations for Brook which will enhance the services we provide to young people.

What’s the best thing about having Jacqueline and Ruby, and other volunteers working with you?

Having Jacqueline and Ruby volunteer meant we had more of a presence at the festival, we would not have been able to conduct the bucket collection without them. Volunteers enable us to do much more than we would otherwise be able to do.

Thank you Jacqueline and Ruby for everything you have done to support young people, and Brook.

September 2017

September's Volunteer of the month is...

Kristina Papworth-Sommers, a Brand and Design Volunteer who supports the central Digital and Communications team.

We asked Kristina a few questions about her volunteering role

What do you do?

I assist the Digital and Communications team with their workload. A lot of my time is spent updating internal documents so that they're in line with Brook's new brand, but I've done a few other bits and bobs while I've been in the office too!

Why did you want to volunteer with Brook?

A friend of mine has been volunteering with another charity for a while and has got loads out of it, so I decided to take up volunteering too. I've always been interested in sexual health and its improvement, so Brook, being the UK's biggest sexual health charity, was the natural place to apply to!

What do you get out of volunteering for Brook?

I've got loads! I had never worked in an office before, and have learnt how to act, dress, communicate etc. in an office environment. I've learnt about the different jobs my colleagues have and have had in the past, and about what it's like working for a charity in general. My computer skills have come on a lot since all of my work is computer-based, and it's hard not to learn about different aspects of sexual health when you're reading over documents about it all day!

What would you say to someone who was considering volunteering at Brook?

Be a YES person! That sounds really cringey, but I was hesitant to apply because I was worried I wouldn't be able to keep up the commitment alongside other constraints, like my studies. Perhaps I'm lucky that my manager and team are so flexible, but as a volunteer I think you're granted a certain level of flexibility and sympathy, so long as you're not being more of an inconvenience than a help. I'm so glad that I did apply, because I've got so much out of it already!

We also heard from Isabel Inman, Media and Communications Manager, who nominated Kristina, who told us more about the benefit Kristina brings to Brook and young people.

Why did you nominate Kristina?

Kristina has been an invaluable asset in rebranding clinical documents and policies / procedures for the Intranet as well as redesigning posters and other branded resources.

How does Kristina support young people and Brook’s work?

Kristina has taken a huge work load off the communications team at a very busy time during Brook’s rebrand rollout, and has supported staff throughout the organisation by updating vital documents.

What’s the best thing about having Kristina, and other volunteers working with you?

Having an extra pair of hands for one day a week is a real asset and Kristina already feels like part of the team after a month of volunteering. She is extremely efficient and is a delight to have in the office!

Thank you Kristina for everything you have done to support young people, and Brook.

August 2017

August's Volunteer of the month was...

Eleanor Calver, a remote Volunteer who has supported various events and workshops.

We asked Eleanor a few questions about her volunteering role

What do you do?

I have volunteered at various national events, including the Strategic Launch in March 2017, and young people’s workshops. I co-facilitated and delivered workshops on pornography and sexting to gain insight into their experiences and views on these topics to inform educational materials. Moreover, I volunteered at the Relationship and Sex Education workshop with Brook Ambassador Hannah Whitton to prioritise examples of RSE programmes, develop a young people's charter for RSE and explore what constitutes good RSE. I will be attending the Labour Party Conference on behalf of Brook in September, a chance to speak to Members of Parliament and inform them what is important to young people in relation to sexual health and wellbeing.

Why did you want to volunteer with Brook?

Brook is a renowned institution and organisation within sexual health, and I wanted to gain further experience of their work while studying for my MSc in Sexual Health.

What do you get out of volunteering for Brook?

I have gained further knowledge of young people's sexual health needs and priorities, and the work Brook does to engage young people and put them at the forefront.

What would you say to someone who was considering volunteering at Brook?

Do it! It's an incredible charity which has young people at it's heart.

We also heard from Laura West, Participation and Volunteering Manager, who nominated Eleanor, who told us more about the benefit Eleanor brings to Brook and young people.

Why did you nominate Eleanor?

Eleanor has supported Brook at a number of events and participation focus groups bringing enthusiasm and knowledge which has really aided the events. Eleanor is always happy to help from leading small group work, to greeting people, to even walking to a tube station to meet young people in the rain!

How does Eleanor support young people and Brook’s work?

Having Eleanor to support events and particularly focus groups enables participants to have a better experience as there is an additional person to answer questions and meet their needs. Eleanor is proactive, and therefore sometimes does things before we have thought about them allowing staff time to focus on other elements of delivery.

What’s the best thing about having Eleanor, and other volunteers working with you?

Having a volunteer like Eleanor is great as they offer an extra pair of hands, and bring knowledge and experience from another angle. It is also great to know that offering these volunteering opportunities has supported Eleanor gain employment with Brook.

Thank you Eleanor for everything you have done to support young people, and Brook.

July 2017

July's Volunteer of the month was...

Fiona Kingston, a remote Education and Wellbeing Assistant Volunteer.

We asked Fiona a few questions about her volunteering role

What do you do?

I assist with the developing and formatting of education materials for Brook, working specifically on the topic of sexuality. I have helped to write up and quality assure activities for a range of aspects on this topic, improving the materials available to those delivering Brook education sessions to young people and adults.

Why did you want to volunteer with Brook?

I believe that relatively limited sexual education in British schools and a lack of willingness to have honest and frank conversations about sex is preventing young people from having safe and enjoyable sexual relationships. I think Brook is doing great work to try and address this problem and I wanted to help.

What do you get out of volunteering for Brook?

I have learnt a great deal about sexuality and healthy relationships, gaining a greater understanding of other people's experiences and learning to prepare positive activities to teach young people about this topic.

What would you say to someone who was considering volunteering at Brook?

I think Brook is a fantastic organisation who offers challenging and rewarding volunteering opportunities. If you are passionate about raising awareness of sexual health and positive sexual relationships, then volunteering with Brook will give you the chance to be part of this campaign in a meaningful way.

We also heard from Laura West, Participation and Volunteering Manager, who nominated Fiona, who told us more about the benefit Fiona brings to Brook and young people.

Why did you nominate Fiona?

Fiona has been supporting the process of developing and quality assuring our education materials. This process involves us collating materials from across all of Brook, amalgamating similar versions and developing them further to ensure they meet our quality assurance criteria. It can be a long process, but Fiona completed a key topic with enthusiasm and dedication.

In addition, the role was remote, meaning she did not come into a Brook service, which required a higher level of motivation to complete it. Fiona embraced the role, has helped us to evaluate this remote volunteering opportunities, as well as supporting our education materials.

How does Fiona support young people and Brook’s work?

Fiona has benefited Brook by developing and creating new activities around sexuality. With this she has brought new ideas and identified gaps in what we do. This has resulted in our activities being of good quality and ready to be used by our education team, while offering a broader range of activities to young people and adults around the topic.

From Fiona’s feedback about the role, which was a new role and type of opportunity, we can further develop the role and opportunity to ensure that the next volunteers we recruit to it have an even better experience.

What’s the best thing about having Fiona, and other volunteers working with you?

Volunteers, particularly when developing activities, can bring new ideas and personal experience which can positively affect the work we're doing within Brook. Alongside this they can question and identify gaps which we may have missed.

It is also great to work with them knowing that you are giving them a positive experience which could help them achieve in education, professional life, or just have an opportunity to make a difference.

Thank you Fiona for everything you have done to support young people, and Brook.

June 2017

June's Volunteer of the month was...

Harry Wide, a student studying for his A-Levels and volunteering with us weekly in Bristol as a work placement.

We asked Harry a few questions about his volunteering role

What do you do?

I mostly support the education and wellbeing team by helping out at drop ins, chatting to clients as they're waiting and generally trying to put them at ease, making them want to return to Brook! I have also been involved with quality assurance, recruitment, helping on reception and mystery shopping. So far I have mystery shopped approximately 40 pharmacies in Bristol trying to improve the c-card scheme and this has been both funny and insightful! I also like to try and get involved in sharing my opinions and proposals on different projects, however ambitious they may be, and one day hope to start a peer education project!

Why did you want to volunteer with Brook?

I wanted to volunteer at Brook because it is such an interesting and exciting place to be! The work they do is so varied and I've worked with so many different professionals, learning all of their different approaches to working with young people, meaning my experience and personal skills base is constantly growing! Most of all, I'm made to feel as part of the team at Brook and this is so so important, my opinions and thoughts are valued and I've really been able to contribute to Brook and the incredible work they do.

What do you get out of volunteering for Brook?

I've gained so much experience and so many skills. I've worked on quality assurance, writing proposals, talking to young people, mystery shopping and so much more. From the day I've started I've accessed as much training as possible, from C-Card training to gender awareness and I know that this will all be incredibly useful when I enter a career in nursing.

What would you say to someone who was considering volunteering at Brook?

Do it! The opportunities are endless and you'll have an amazing time volunteering, the staff are great and you'll be made to feel part of an amazing team. When volunteering with Brook you'll certainly get out what you put in so if you're enthusiastic, motivated and innovative then it's certainly for you!

We also heard from Jocelyne Tagg, Education and Wellbeing Coo-ordinator, who nominated Harry, who told us more about the benefit Harry brings to Brook and young people.

Why did you nominate Harry?

Harry has been supporting the Bristol service since September 2016 and has helped us in so many areas of our work.

Most recently Harry has been an integral part in Bristol’s C-Card. Harry has visited over 40 pharmacists which deliver the C-Card to young people, mystery shopping them to check the quality of the information provided to him as a young person. Harry is soon to be writing a full report of the findings which will enable the Education and Wellbeing Specialist to recognise knowledge gaps and deliver further training to C-Card outlets. Following on from this Harry is reviewing the Brook process of getting young people involved in mystery shopping and what their role would entail, with the aim to roll it out in all areas we deliver the C-Card.

Alongside this Harry has supported other areas of Brook work including quality assurance, our drop ins, and encourages young people to complete surveys.

How does Harry support young people and Brook’s work?

Harry brings a lot of initiative and supports the education and wellbeing team in every area. He always brings new ideas and happily shares them with the team. Each week when he comes in he is ready to take on whatever actions we require support in for the week.

Harry is so enthusiastic and always wants the best outcome for young people. When working with us he keeps this at the heart of what he does, sometimes reminding us what is best for the young people we work with.

What’s the best thing about having Harry, and other volunteers working with you?

Harry, and other volunteers, bring a fresh perspective, ideas, and enthusiasm.

Thank you Harry for everything you do to support young people, and Brook. We hope you continue to enjoy and succeed in your volunteering role.

May 2017

May’s Volunteer of the month was...

Aimee Naylor, a Health and Social Care student volunteering with us weekly in Liverpool as an Education and Wellbeing volunteer.

We asked Aimee a few questions about her volunteering role

What do you do?

I am volunteering at Brook as an Education Wellbeing volunteer as part of my health and social care studies which involves learning about human anatomy to health prevention and from safeguarding to life development.

I support the education and wellbeing team in anything that they need support with. This can vary from administration to preparing sessions to co-facilitating BiteSize Zones.

Why did you want to volunteer with Brook?

To me volunteering at Brook was and still remains an important part of the foundation to my future career aspirations. For a long time now I have wanted to involve myself in sexual health and wellbeing and volunteering at Brook has definitely been the route I have always wanted to and needed to take. I can say that volunteering at Brook has furthered my aspirations and gave me the confidence to do so, going above and beyond.

What do you get out of volunteering for Brook?

Volunteering at Brook gives me a sense of what the future could be like for me, especially when I want to go into sexual health. Volunteering alongside Education and Wellbeing specialists at Brook allows me to not only educate myself but also the young people the service works with. What Brook gives to me and young people is something I hope to give to others in the future.

What would you say to someone who was considering volunteering at Brook?

Go for it. Volunteering at Brook is greatly rewarding, not only to yourself but also to those you come across during your volunteering experience.

We also heard from Vicki Hartley, Education and Wellbeing specialist, who nominated Aimee, who told us more about the benefit Aimee brings to Brook and young people.

Why did you nominate Aimee for volunteer of the month?

Aimee has been volunteering with the Brook Education team for 6 months now, and we have watched her grow and develop so much. She is dedicated to Brook’s values and she constantly pushes herself to make the most out of her 1 day a week volunteering to support the team.

Aimee is always so helpful in the office and out on sessions, she has started co-facilitating BiteSize zones, something she has really pushed herself to do, and is doing a brilliant job at. She also supports other areas of Brook’s work with many brilliant ideas making sure that young people remain at the heart of Brook.

When Aimee first started, she was thinking of going to university to study Sexual Health, and whilst volunteering with Brook, she has applied and been offered a conditional place at Uclan!

We are impressed and overwhelmed with the passion and dedication that Aimee has shown throughout her time volunteering at Brook, each day she attends, she is fully ready to contribute to delivering a quality service to young people, we want Aimee to be recognised for her hard work and enthusiasm and thank her for being a key member of the volunteer team.

How does Aimee support young people and Brook's work?

Aimee is a huge help to the team, she supports us in the office, and anything we ask her to support us with, and she always does a brilliant job!

On sessions she is polite and respectful to the team and the young people. As a young person herself she is a positive role model to other young people she sees on sessions.

What's the best thing about having Aimee, and other volunteers, working with you?

I really enjoy having volunteers attend sessions with us and hearing their feedback. All of our volunteers are always so pleased with the work we do, and recognise the importance of it.

It is lovely when a volunteer stretches themselves, watching them develop and seeing how proud they are after they have pushed themselves. It is a brilliant opportunity to offer volunteers.

Thank you Aimee for everything you do to support young people, and Brook. We hope you continue to enjoy and succeed in your volunteering role.

April 2017

April's Volunteer of the month was...

Jackie Buckley, a LGBT group facilitator from Blackburn since 2014.

We asked Jackie a few questions about her volunteering role.

What do you do?

I facilitate the LGBT group, this covers the whole of Lancashire.

Why did you want to volunteer with Brook?

I have been a youth worker most of my life, the LGBT group needed a new worker so I stepped in.

What do you get out of volunteering for Brook?

I love working with groups of young people, and started my early youth work as a volunteer, it is a very rewarding thing to do.  My philosophy is "do volunteering first, see if it the right role for you, because it is not easy to engage a room full of young people, and no amount of money or pay will make you better at it!!

What would you say to someone who was considering volunteering at Brook?

Do it, it is a fantastic thing to do!

We also heard from Simone Taylor, Regional Lead, who nominated Jackie and took the opportunity to find out a little more about the benefit Jackie brings to Brook and young people.

Why did you nominate Jackie for volunteer of the month?

Jackie has facilitated the Brook Blackburn LGBTQ group for 3 years. The group runs every Tuesday and has grown in the number of people attending the group over the years. The young people have enjoyed attending the group so much some of them have gone on to other volunteer opportunities themselves within Brook Lancashire.

Jackie facilitated the group to host the LGBTQ Pink Wink awards last year which was an amazing event seeing groups from all of the North West attending. There are also plans other plans to do even more in Lancashire.

Jackie is also an Education and Wellbeing Specialist for Brook and although Jackie works extremely hard all day in her role she always attends and facilitates the LGBTQ group each week within her Volunteer role with lots of enthusiasm and a big smile!

How does Jackie support young people and Brook's work?

The group would not be able to run without Jackie. The young people who attend now travel from all across Lancashire to attend each week. It is very important that we facilitate the group to support and offer a safe environment for young LGBTQ people and as an organisation it is our vision that "We believe that young people should have access to great sexual health services and wellbeing support.

What's the best thing about having Jackie, and other volunteers, working with you?

They bring new experiences to Brook.

Thank you Jackie for everything you do to support young people, and Brook. We hope you continue to enjoy and succeed in your volunteering role.
