Brook statement on media reports about research into contraceptive pills and risk of blood clots

Responding to media reports about research in the British Medical Journal which found that use of some types of combined oral contraceptive pills increased the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE or blood clots), Brook's Head of Nursing Sue Burchill said:

"All types of medication carry some degree of risk, and the risk of developing a blood clot due to taking a contraceptive pill is very small.

"If you have any questions about your use of a contraceptive pill, and the possible side effects, please carry on taking it as normal and ask your doctor or sexual health service for more information."

The Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare has said that the BMJ research has not changed its prescribing advice for contraceptive pills, and notes that the risk of VTE is also significantly raised during pregnancy and after childbirth, to a degree much greater than the risk associated with taking a contraceptive pill.
