Brook Scotland receives funding boost for award winning Highland education projects

Young people’s sexual health and wellbeing charity Brook Scotland has received funding to allow it to develop and expand its education programmes in the Highland region.

The funding – worth more than £109,000 over three years – has been generously provided by three trusts: the Robertson Trust, the RS Macdonald Charitable Trust, and the Volant Charitable Trust through Foundation Scotland.

Thanks to this funding, Brook Highland will continue to offer a Brook education programme, which encourages young people to learn about sexual health and relationships through participation and the exploration of specific issues and scenarios, to schools and young people’s settings in the Highland region for another three years.

The Brook SRE Partnership was awarded the Highland Partnership of 2015 at the recent Highland Third Sector Interface awards ceremony. The Partnership is led by the Brook Highland team at Brook Scotland, and includes representation from Waverley Care, LGBT Youth Scotland, Youth Highland and Birchwood Highland. Together they deliver education within secondary schools across the region.

This funding will also ensure the delivery of Brook’s All Different, All Beautiful programme to young people who have been identified as at risk or vulnerable in some way and targeted one-to-one support around wider sexual health and well-being for young people who may be particularly vulnerable through their My Life Programme.

Brook education programmes teache young people about topics such as consent, contraception, sexuality and sexually transmitted infections and can be tailored to individual groups’ needs. All Different, All Beautiful focuses on raising young people’s self esteem and confidence, empowering them to take control of their health and relationships. The My Life programme aims to awaken and strengthen young people’s motivation and skills thereby raising their aspirations, enhancing their self-esteem and improving their health and well-being.

Dr Gaener Rodger, Education & Training Manager at Brook Scotland said:

“I’m delighted that Brook Scotland has received this funding from the Robertson Trust, the RS Macdonald Charitable Trust, and the Volant Charitable Trust through Foundation Scotland, which will allow our education work to reach even more young people in Highland, enabling us to provide different levels of education and support to young people depending on their specific needs and vulnerabilities.

“My Life and All Different, All Beautiful have been designed with and for young people, to make them as relevant and accessible as possible. We’re really passionate about informing and educating young people, so they can stay safe and healthy, and build their self confidence.”

A spokesperson for the RS Macdonald Charitable Trust said:

"The RS Macdonald Trust is delighted to continue our support of Brook's work in the Highlands. We have been impressed with the development of the programmes over the past couple of years and are pleased that even more young people will have the opportunity to benefit from their support."
