Brook supports FPA's call for urgent action in improving contraceptive services

In response to FPA's report into contraception access in the UK, Brook’s Policy Manager Lisa Hallgarten said:

“Brook believes that all young people should have access to great sexual health services and wellbeing support. We hope that the shocking statistics released today are a real wake-up call, and we join FPA in its call for action.

“For more than 50 years Brook has been providing young people under 25 with contraceptive services both in clinical and outreach settings. In 2016 more than 65,000 young people visited our clinics and we know first-hand that the people we support want access to confidential services with professionals that are specially trained to work with young people.

“Today’s report demonstrates that reductions in public health funding are having a severe impact on contraceptive choices for all women. At Brook we are particularly concerned that dedicated young people’s services, like ours, are at risk.  The current commissioning system is failing to meet the needs of under 25s, especially those that are most vulnerable, and we urge the government to take action before the situation reaches crisis point. ”
