Brook Liverpool welcomes Luciana Berger MP

Luciana Berger, MP for Liverpool Wavertree and Shadow Public Health Minister visited Brook Liverpool on Friday 4 April to find out more about Brook’s work with young people in the area, and to talk to Brook Liverpool’s staff and young peer educators.

Young peer educators had the opportunity to talk the Shadow Minister through some of Brook’s highly popular resources from our hugely successful education programmes, used to facilitate discussions around sexually transmitted infections, sexuality, body image, contraception including condom use, and the “Sexcuses” programme, which helps young people to resist pressures to have sex before they feel ready.

During her visit, Ms Berger met staff from Brook Liverpool, including Elle Hughes, Nurse Manager, Shelly Ramsbottom, Service Coordinator, and Laura Hannah, Education and Training Manager.

Also in attendance on the day were Liverpool sexual health commissioners Susie Gardiner and Karen Lawrenson, Liverpool Associate Director of Public Health Sandra Davies, Chair of Liverpool Healthwatch Edwin Morgan, Wirral sexual health commissioners Deborah Williams and Julie Graham, CEO of Wirral Community Trust Simon Gilby, and GUM Lead Nurse at the Royal Liverpool University Teaching Hospital Kathy Watson.

Luciana Berger MP said:

"I was delighted to visit Brook and learn about the important work they do to support young people to make informed choices about their personal relationships.

"The nation’s sexual health is improving but our outcomes are still amongst the worst in Europe. Through the vital services they provide, Brook helps young people to navigate the misleading messages that often surround sex and relationships and be wise when it comes to real life situations."

Julie Brierley, Brook’s Area Director for North of England and Scotland, commented:

"It was a pleasure to welcome Luciana Berger to Brook Liverpool, and to talk to her about the work we do with thousands of young people across the North West and Wirral every year.

"Our young peer educators demonstrated their education outreach skills, showing Ms Berger exactly why they’re such a valuable part of our team, and why young people respond so well to their sessions.

"I and everyone at Brook Liverpool look forward to continuing to work with Ms Berger to further the discussion around young people’s health and wellbeing, especially their sexual health, on both a local and a national scale."
